Rottefella/NTN Binding ($349 with brakes, #329 without)
The Rottefella New Telemark Norm (NTN) binding is nothing less than curing all the shortcomings of the antiquiated 75mm/three-pin toe-and-cable binding that goes back decades. Telemarkers finally have true step-in convenience. With the NTN system, the boot is gripped firmly in the binding, independent of cable or spring tension. There is a direct connection between the ball of the foot and the ski. Those who like the smooth, soft flex of a traditional touring boot will opt for medium-power tubes, while piste skiers can install an extra rigid spring for even greater control. The binding features a release mechanism and can be ordered with or without a brake, and the entire unit sits atop a beefy plate to increase power in the turn. Note: you must purchase an NTN-compatible boot to use the binding--so far, Scarpa and Crispi are on board.
