BCA Squall Pack Receives Outside “Gear of the Year” Award

Posted on Oktober 21st, 2010 by steve | 0 Comments

It’s always rewarding when one of our products receives strong praise from an “outside” source.

This year, Outside Magazine has named our BCA Squall pack in the “Gear of the Year” awards. This pack has always been one of our favorites; from lift-served backcountry skiing to grabbing a sixer at the store, this pack does it all. It was even used on a week long BC hut excursion last season during testing and I knew after that week that we had a winner on our hands with the new design. To see the review, check out the Outside Buyer’s Guide Winter 2011 and turn to page 94.

Proctor Mountain Tracker Rescue: January 2008

Posted on Oktober 20th, 2010 by north | 2 Comments

BCA is featuring rescuers who have used a Tracker beacon to save a life. The following account is from Janina Kuzma.

Monday the 7th of January started off like any other day. I got the call from Todd that the turns were bomber off the back side of Proctor Mountain. So we packed our gear and left. The Avalanche bulletin for that day was considerable in the tree line, and we knew the dangers with the ‘deep slab instability’ within the snow pack. So the game plan was to play in the mellow trees beside the turns from the skiers the day before.

After a 10 km drive we loaded… Read more

Wyoming Triumph- Webisode #2

Posted on Oktober 14th, 2010 by andy | 0 Comments

Take a journey deep into the mountains of Wyoming with a group of unique characters, as they explore the state with the most rugged and remote terrain in the lower forty eight; a place where the ideals of individualism and freedom that founded the West are alive and well.

From the cattle ranch to the backcountry, the crew will push their mental and physical limits to overcome injuries, wild weather and unforeseen circumstances, in the unskied terrain of remote Wyoming.

With an entirely original score, it will be a movie of exploration, set mostly in towns where more people own an elk rifle than a pair of skis.

This season’s forecast: Snow

Posted on Oktober 6th, 2010 by Dave | 1 Comment

Wondering where to schedule your big road trips this season? Here’s a guest blog from Colorado weather guru Joel Gratz of coloradopowderforecast.com. If you’re a stormchaser, then you should bookmark his site and sign up for his email alerts. While his forecast centers around Colorado, keep in mind that La Nina usually means big snow in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies too. We’ll get another take this Friday from Joe Ramey of the National Weather Service. He’ll be speaking at the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop. Stay tuned.

In the movie “Fight club”, the first rule is to not talk about fight club.

In meteorology, the first rule I… Read more

White Pass Tracker Rescue

Posted on Oktober 4th, 2010 by Dave | 0 Comments

Here’s an inspiring guest blog from WD Frank of Yakima, Washington, who was rescued by his touring buddy, Rick Johnson, last year with a Tracker DTS.

February 25 marked the anniversary of my near-death burial in an avalanche at White Pass, WA, when my ski partner, Rick Johnson, used his BCA Tracker to find my BCA Tracker as I lay face down and unconscious under three and a half feet of snow. His cool nerves combined with our twenty years’ worth of practice saved my life — and I am convinced that the efficiency of the Trackers played a critical role as well. (My device was one of your original… Read more
