So what is the CAA AGM all about? It’s a week-long meeting with avalanche forecasters, educators, ski guides, snowmobile guides, industry, and highways to go over the season’s efforts, events, actions and plans. Evangelista Brothers Episode 2

Posted on April 23rd, 2013 by steve | 0 Comments

I can remember when these guys were little groms. Man how time flies! In the last five years these two have really started putting out some excellent videos. Their dedication to skiing and filming is relentless. We’re seeing them in the mags (even on a cover), they’re getting more sponsors, and their parents still let them skip school when it snows more than a foot. At Baker that means missing about six weeks a year-but they still get all A’s. And the word “teen” is still in both their ages. These kids rule. Enjoy the video. It gets back to the radness that is Mt. Baker around the three minute… Read more

Jackson Hole World Championship Hill Climb – Tapio Recap

Kyle gets ready for his test run. The ankle held up!

BCA athlete and 2013 King of the Hill, Kyle Tapio, checks in after a strong weekend of riding in Jackson, Wyoming. This year wasn’t a walk in the park, but the Tapio Bros still managed to take care of business.
Below is Kyle’s recap from the weekend of racing:
What a story we have, one week before the race myself and  brother Nels had an accident while out riding, injuring my left leg and ankle. Thankfully nothing was broken, a true test of the HMK boots we wear. I am sure my foot would have been much worse if not for those. Nels came out of the crash with a bit… Read more

Pacific Alpine Guides Review the BCA Float 32 Airbag Pack

Pacific Alpine Guides Gear Review of BCA Float 32 Airbag

Originally Post: Solveig Waterfall - March 22, 2013 - Dispatches & Trip Reports
In the last few years airbag packs seem to have received a disproportionate amount of press in relation to other types of avalanche safety equipment.
This is mostly due to the astounding statistics regarding their use in avalanche accidents. In reality, it is difficult to accurately calculate the percentage of effect on the mortality rate due to the infinite level of variables regarding snow quality, environment, and the victim in any given accident. The general consensus, however, is that investing in an airbag pack does increase the likelihood that you will end up on or near the surface of the… Read more

Outdoor Gear Lab Rates the BCA Tracker 2 as “Best Buy – Best Value Avalanche Beacon” in 2013

OutdoorGearLab Logo: Reviews BCA Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

What is the best avalanche beacon for the backcountry?  To find out, Outdoor Gear Lab took nine of the top avalanche transceiver models and put them in rigorous head-to-head tests in the Cascades, Sierra, and Alaska. They had novices test them to see which is easiest to use and learn and then also put them in the hands of expert mountain guides and AIARE instructors who teach avalanche safety courses.
Outdoor Gear Lab picked the Backcountry Access Tracker 2, three-antennae avalanche transceiver as the “Best Buy – Best Value” for 2013. The outdoor gear review website reports that the BCA Tracker 2 stands out as one of the easiest beacons to use,… Read more

(Not) Skiing the Pineapple Express

Posted on March 5th, 2013 by andy | 9 Comments

By Donny Roth- Learn more about Donny and his latest human powered projects at Independent Descents.
As a skier that calls Colorado home, I am normally thrilled to hear the expression “Pineapple Express.”  This is the term we use to describe an atmospheric river that brings warm, moist air from the water near the Hawaiian Islands and flows on shore somewhere in North America.  It makes perfect sense to me that anytime we can combine Hawaii and Colorado things are going to be good.  Our continental climate needs a significant amount of moisture before things get really deep, and the elevation makes it so we very rarely deal with rain… Read more

Cazz the Avalanche Dog demonstrates some usual “Avalanche Deterrent” techniques in Banff National Park

Check out National Park Warden dog handler Mike Henderson and Cazz – his avalanche rescue dog  and general duty police dog. They recently travelled to Lake Louise and discuss avalanche safety and awareness with ski patroller Craig Sheppard.
Parks Canada made this video to emphasize serious safety issues with regards to avalanche safety. However, the “avalanche deterrent” technique is not a real technique – they don’t really send Avi Dogs out chasing rope jumpers looking for easy backcountry and sidecountry access. (It’s just a little Canadian humor at play to make an impact).
Watch Mike and Cazz demonstrate some unusual “avalanche deterrent” techniques to help discourage people from entering closed… Read more

Ski Trip on Hokkaido Island, Japan

Ski touring above the Sea of Japan….!

Hello to all BCA team,
After 10 days on the Hokkaido Island in Japan, I take a moment to inform you on this magnificent journey, to make you share my experiences, some images and make a first feedback on the equipment!
I take off from France on Wednesday, 16 for Sapporo, capital of the region of Hokkaido, the most northerly island of the Japanese archipelago. After almost 27 hours of journey and a stopover in Seoul, I land at the airport of Chitose after a randomly landing on the snowy track. We are almost at the level of the sea and the quantity of snow is already hallucinating.
2 hours… Read more

‘Always wear a beacon,’ says Utah man who assisted in avalanche rescue of snowmobiler

The use of avalanche beacons and rigorous rescue training resulted in the swift rescue of a snowmobiler buried in an avalanche in the Utah’s Monte Cristo area.
The snowmobiler was recovered in just four to five minutes after being buried by a 350-foot wide avalanche in an area south of Whiskey Creek, said Sgt. Brandon Toll of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday. The slide apparently started when the man cut a path into an area locals call the “bobsled run.”
“The guys were prepared, trained and when this occurred, immediately their training kicked in and we were able to have a successful outcome,” he said.
Toll said… Read more
