Avalanche Rescue Caught on Video

Posted on April 30th, 2012 by steve | 3 responses

This video was produced by some Utah snowmobilers along with the Utah Avalanche Center. There’s a lot to learn from watching it but many folks are probably going to find it easy to criticize some of the choices and actions from this day. If you watch the entire video, you’ll see that the group was aware of some of the key mistakes they made. So let’s look at the positive aspects of the video and not harsh on them.… Read more

Statement from BCA about “viral” airbag video

Posted on February 10th, 2012 by edge | 18 responses

The recent avalanche near Montezuma (Colo.) has fueled a media sensation.  The video of Meesh Hytner–captured by Tyler Malay and posted on our website–went viral.  It has been viewed nearly 700,000 times on Youtube, been featured on CNN, Fox News, multiple local and international outlets, and has been seen in Japan, Taiwan and Germany, to name a few. It’s crazy!  We just returned from ISPO (our major tradeshow in Munich, Germany) and walked into a media frenzy.

We normally do not feel compelled to make a statement where accidents and the use of our equipment is involved. But given the viral nature fueled by this stunning and vivid footage, we… Read more

Exciting news- we have another confirmed airbag save, this time coming out of our own backyard near Montezuma, Colorado.
Meesh Hytner, a pro snowboarder, was riding near the Snake River drainage on January 25th and triggered a substantial (R2D2+) avalanche that took her tumbling to the valley floor below. She was able to deploy her Float 30 avalanche airbag shortly after the crown broke, allowing her to remain on the surface of the giant slab as it broke out above her.
We had a chance to catch Meesh’s story firsthand when she dropped by the BCA booth at SIA. “I felt like I was riding a mattress down the stairs,”… Read more

Kitzbuhel avalanche: the ultimate airbag test

Bengt and Stina

We don’t normally make a habit of promoting our competitors, but in this case, they deserve huge credit. At a recent gathering of outdoor retailers in Stockholm, Sweden, organizer Bengt Klingheim (Swedish distributor of both BCA and ABS airbags) invited a local avalanche survivor to recount her miraculous recovery last year in Austria. The incident is one more piece of very convincing evidence that avalanche airbags truly work.

The guest speaker, 30-year-old Stina Sletterström, was caught in an avalanche while skiing off-piste near Kitzbuhel Austria in February of 2010. Unfortunately, her presentation was in Swedish, so I didn’t get much out of it–although, like most American males in Sweden, I… Read more

Dick Howe Talks about His First Avalanche-in the early 1940′s

No beacons, no probes, no shovels. One death and one near miss.

I was talking to a guy the other day about backcountry skiing and he used the phrase “back in the day…” and he was about 35 years old. This is the real deal from “back in the day:”

BCA tech rep Nick Armitage locates Teton avi victims

Posted on April 26th, 2011 by edge | 0 responses

BCA tech rep Nick Armitage located the transmit signals of Gregory Seftick and Walter Kuhl on Saturday in Garnet Canyon, in Grand Teton National Park. The two victims succumbed to an avalanche while camped in the basin during a snowstorm the weekend before. After six days of searching with probe lines, dog teams, and Recco detectors, Armitage picked up a faint signal with his Tracker2 avalanche transceiver. The victims were buried 13 feet deep and were evacuated by helicopter on Easter Sunday.
