How “magic” is 38 degrees? A report from the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop.

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by edge | 3 responses

Is this a wive’s tale? Actually, this magic number can vary between 38 and 51 degrees, according to Ian McCammon, who spoke last Friday at the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop (CSAW). The event was organized by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), with nearly 500 professionals attending from the all over the western U.S.

The magic number can depend on snow climate, avalanche type, and grain type, said McCammon, who studied several hundred avalanches since… Read more

Portillo Ski Resort Spring Skiing

Posted on October 20th, 2009 by admin | 2 responses

After a trip to Chile in 2004 where there were consistent 75° days and more, time was spent drinking Pisco Sours at the pool and making turns, my wife and I felt like we had unresolved business with Portillo Ski Resort. Headed up to Jones pass on Sunday with a few friends to get some turns in. It was nice to get the legs skinning again. Eventhough we probably only skied 1000 vert for the day, my legs are a little sore this morning…… Read more

Are You Practicing?

Posted on October 8th, 2009 by steve | 0 responses

We had a great week of training with our BCA reps and scored the weather yesterday for our annual field day in the sands of Boulder Reservoir. Eight hours of beacon searching, probing, shoveling and the grand finale, our BCA Cup transceiver race! I’ll post video next week of some beacon searching that highlights the new terminology for the four avalanche search phases as well as some great examples of proper search technique.

We’re out practicing our skills and getting ready for this winter, we hope you’re doing the same!… Read more
