Here’s a sweet video made by Donni Vognild, a Northwest photographer and all-around radical adventure woman. If you live in one of the regions hit by La Nada, this video will have you drooling:

Skiing the Drought

Drought?

La Nina has pretty much turned into La Nada recently but a nice little pulse came through WA on Monday so we decided to head out and check on the conditions. We were pretty psyched with the results! Plus, it was an awesome excuse to keep getting the sled dialed in for ski touring access. And, I was able to catch up with two old friends from Colorado, CB and Mickey (formerly of Keystone Patrol and Wilderness Sports). Here’s what it looked like:… Read more

A Blending of the Tribes! (Skier gets a sled…)

New Sled

For the past 15 years or so I’ve been lucky to access some pretty awesome skiing terrain by using a snowmobile to get up long, snow covered, closed highways. But the problem that’s existed is that I was always “the guy without a sled.” It’s not spoken, but no sled owner really wants to deal with you after they’ve taken you out a dozen or more times riding you double or towing you. So thanks to Larry Goldie, Rod Martin, and a few others (you showed me the light), I finally bit the bullet and bought a snowmobile.… Read more

BCA Goes to Japan!

Mr. Seiya Tsurumaki and Mr. Iwao Sone

I’m just back from an epic week in Tokyo visiting our Japanese distributor and the Caravan sales agents. I can’t say enough about how completely awesome this experience was. The folks that run BCA Japan are completely dialed! The entire trip was organized from the moment I stepped off the plane and there wasn’t a second wasted.… Read more

Dick Howe Talks about His First Avalanche-in the early 1940′s

No beacons, no probes, no shovels. One death and one near miss.

I was talking to a guy the other day about backcountry skiing and he used the phrase “back in the day…” and he was about 35 years old. This is the real deal from “back in the day:”

Backcountry Surfing

Posted on July 28th, 2011 by steve | 0 responses

We did a bit of backcountry surfing this past weekend on the west coast.

It rained pretty much the whole time and the hike was gnarly but we had good waves and a torching fire to dry out and stay warm. Here are some photos:… Read more

Dick Howe on the 10th Mountain Division, and Then Some…

Talk about meeting an inspirational person!

I was out surfing this past weekend with my friend Pat Howe who’s one of those stealthy “silent but deadly” kind of guys who moves swiftly and efficiently through the backcountry, the water, and life in general. He’s a competent outdoors person and a man of few and quiet words.

On this trip he let it slip that his dad had been in the 10th Mountain Division which is a pretty big deal if you like to ski and have any interest in the history of the sport.

The good news was that we planned to stay with Pat’s parents in Sequim, WA, for… Read more

“Bad day” on sleds: Our favorite online dealers in action.

Here’s a homegrown video of snowmobiling outtakes and bloopers from the Beck brothers (www.snowbigdeal.com) and their friends. They are not pro snowmobilers, but they’re pretty darn close. Make sure you listen closely to the sound track. These guys have been selling BCA equipment since almost day 1 and it’s been a fun ride. We’ve been planning to get out with them on their home turf in rural Utah, but have just changed our minds…

A Picture is Worth a 14 Hour Drive…

Here’s a guest blog from Brandy Floyd. Brandy is a snowmobile shredder, avalanche educator and avid rider from Washington State. You can check out her web site at this link: http://www.brandyfloyd.com/

A picture is worth a 14 hour drive?

It all started the morning of Friday May 27th with a photo posted on Facebook of the Dutchmen Snow Park in Bend, OR.

The ripple effect of said picture reached me, sitting in my office in Bellevue, WA. Before viewing this picture I had plans to remain home and pout over our lack of sunshine locally. The vision of fresh snow set in motion a frantic night of packing up sleds,… Read more

The SICK Children of Glacier, WA.

Posted on May 27th, 2011 by steve | 1 response

One of the greatest things about working at BCA is traveling to different regions and checking out the variances in North American ski culture. I can tell you that in Crested Butte it’s still popular to have a flavor savor (this was also true in 1988). In Nelson the “rage” is wearing your latest all-natural-wool toque made by your girlfriend or mom and it needs to sit on your head just right. In Jackson it’s all about keeping up with the locals on both the up and the down. At Alpental it’s about maintaining an urban feeding-frenzy mentality by snaking pow and the lift line whenever possible (this is a… Read more
