Skiing the Drought

Drought?

La Nina has pretty much turned into La Nada recently but a nice little pulse came through WA on Monday so we decided to head out and check on the conditions. We were pretty psyched with the results! Plus, it was an awesome excuse to keep getting the sled dialed in for ski touring access. And, I was able to catch up with two old friends from Colorado, CB and Mickey (formerly of Keystone Patrol and Wilderness Sports). Here’s what it looked like:… Read more

New airbag rules to hit commercial airlines

IATA Airbag Dangerous Goods Regulation - cover

Starting a year from now, it will be easier to travel on commercial airlines with an airbag other than an ABS–unless you’re a gringo. The Geneva, Switzerland-based International Airline Transport Association (IATA) has approved new verbiage in their “dangerous goods regulation” that accommodates all the new airbags that have recently hit the market. In the past, the wording in this regulation was limited to features that are specific to airbags from ABS, the original airbag brand out of Germany. This included limits on the amount of explosive in the ABS pyrotechnic trigger, as well as a limit on the size of the compressed gas cylinder. This verbiage has been detuned… Read more

Indian Peak Pits

float carry

Engineer Adam and I got out this past weekend to trek around in the Indian Peaks, and while the snow turned out to be a pretty awful blend of thin crusts and styrofoam, the sun and limited wind still provided us a chance to hunker down and study some snow.

The pit showed three semi-distinct wind layers of varying depths but with similar densities and grain types throughout (pencil hardness/wind-packed rounded grains). Our compression test resulted in a Q2 sheer at eight hits from the shoulder (CTH) on a middle layer. Unfortunately this deep wind drift was not indicative of our line at all, which consisted instead of shallow pockets of snow… Read more

CAIC Benefit Bash breaks record.

Benefit Bash band

The numbers are in from the CAIC Benefit Bash, held Nov. 12 in Breckenridge. The fourth annual fundraiser grossed $72,000 in revenues and netted $63,000 for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. This might be the biggest avalanche center fundraiser in North America, right up there with the Utah Avalanche Center fundraiser held every fall in Salt Lake.

The CAIC Benefit Bash was presented by BCA, Voilé, La Sportiva, New Belgium Brewery, and Vail Resorts.  Held at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge, it hosted 1300 people. Organizers Aaron Carlson and Joe Vandal gave away over $20,000 in product, had 63 silent auction items on hand, and broke all  previous fundraising records… Read more

Pimp My Skis – An adventure in custom ski manufacturing

This one's... For John...

Hey everyone! Alex Eherenman, BCA Sourcing and Product Team Coordinator here.
Most skiers and snowboarders have probably noticed that, over the past several years, there has been a veritable explosion in the number of small custom ski and snowboard manufacturers in existence. These companies (which seem to be popping up anywhere and everywhere remotely close to skiing) run the gamut from one-man garage projects to large, hundreds-to-thousands-of-pairs-a-year type operations.
This recent phenomenon provides the opportunity for skiers and boarders to have a greater say in what they ride, and to interact directly with the people making their gear. I’m a firm believer in “Buying Local,” and am extremely psyched to… Read more

A Blending of the Tribes! (Skier gets a sled…)

New Sled

For the past 15 years or so I’ve been lucky to access some pretty awesome skiing terrain by using a snowmobile to get up long, snow covered, closed highways. But the problem that’s existed is that I was always “the guy without a sled.” It’s not spoken, but no sled owner really wants to deal with you after they’ve taken you out a dozen or more times riding you double or towing you. So thanks to Larry Goldie, Rod Martin, and a few others (you showed me the light), I finally bit the bullet and bought a snowmobile.… Read more

2011 Training at Silverton Mountain

Silverton beacon training

Here’s a guest post from Kenny Bloggins, writer and guide at my second-favorite resort in North America (you’ll have to guess the first): Silverton Mountain, Colorado. Kenny’s pseudonym is Alex Hunt, or is it the other way around? Anyway, Silverton is getting pounded today and opens this Saturday. If you’re a skier’s skier and you haven’t been to Silverton, put it on your tick list. The terrain is awesome and the attitude is extremely refreshing. No BS here, just great snow, great terrain, and diehard skiers.

The Cement Creek drainage just North of Silverton has been echoing over the last few days from the avalanche explosive testing at Silverton Mountain… Read more
