Trip Report: Wolf Creek Pass

Posted on October 21st, 2011 by andy | 0 responses
Four feet of snow, no matter the time of year is worth a ski. Whether it’s a 4ft dump in January or a 4ft dump in early October, dumpage of this magnitude will drive any die-hard planker to pack up the winter gear and go for a slide. In early October, Colorado saw the first big storm of the season, dropping snow on the high peaks all around the state and burying Wolf Creek Pass. Once the word started to spread, the phone calls started to come in. It never takes much to talk me into skiing and I am usually quick to drop everything else in order to get out. Wolk Creek Pass is a bit over 200mi from BCA HQ in Boulder. Some people think that’s too far to drive just to ski some early season pow and I usually hear something like, “Bro, I’m still getting totally sick on my DH bike and the skiing there is gonna suck,” or along the lines of “I’m at the bar talking to this total hottie, I’ll call ya in the morning if I am gonna make it,” never to hear a word from them. Not paying attention to the naysayers I packed up the Previa with the necessities and hit the road. I met “The Cricco” and Brady S. in SoFo (South Fork), as the local gangsta’s call it, slammed a few cold ones and settled into the van for the night. The following morning brought us blue sky’s, good time and high fives. Since then it’s been back to the mountain bike for most of CO. We’ve been under a bit of high pressure since then, but next week looks like we could get our another dose of old man winter. Let the season begin! Here are a few photos from the trip.

Locked and loaded for the weekend. Did forget anything?

Rescued this guy from the shelter in June. This will be Doppler Radar's first ski trip.

Nice view coming into Fairplay.

Goonies line up for tickets and first tracks at Wolf Creek. We parked in the skier lot there, because The Cricco was on an opening day photo assignment.

Um, that looks pretty good over there!

Brady heads out for his first turns of October.

Plenty of snow for skiing. All you haters missed out!

We got some new hats at BCA this year.

Gotta look out for frost bite.

Brady gets his stttteeeeeoooookkkke on!

Heading back to the big city after getting our fix.

The storm that puked on Wolf Creek moves East to the Sangre De Cristo Range.
