Who says airbags are heavy? BCA’s Team Airbag took the gold medal on Sunday in the 10th annual DoJoe Memorial Uphill-Downhill Race at Eldora Mountain Resort near Boulder. BCA representatives Andrew Edgerly and his uncle Bruce (a BCA VP) raced in pre-production samples of the 2011-12 Float 18 airbag. Bruce deployed his Float at the starting line and Andrew deployed his at the finish. They competed in the men’s Tag Team division, where one person does the uphill portion of the course (Jolly Jug to Corona Bowl) and the other skis the downhill portion (West Ridge). The event is named after former Boulder backcountry skier Joe Despres, who was killed in an avalanche near Eldora in 2001. Results from the other divisions are available soon on the DoJoe website. The event raised over $3,000 for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

The Nederland Fire Department won the DoJoe costume contest. Their air packs were significantly heavier than ours. They skied with full-on SCBA's on their backs--and a hose slung between the five of them.
Evel Knievel and Shaun White both made appearances at the 2011 DoJoe. All were vying for a pair of BD Megawatts donated by renowned Boulder bootfitter Larry Houchen.
Former "Revenge of the Telemarkers" star Willie Mein dressed up as snowboarder Shaun White--and booted the uphill portion of the course. The festive post-race party was sponsored by Boulder's Upslope Brewery. A great event for a great cause--which is why it's sponsored by BCA!
